THERE ARE plans to  build a new bridge crossing the Montgomery Canal at Llanymynech.

They have  been passed by Powys County Council on Monday, Janet Friend reports.

This will allow the disused canal and towpath to be realigned and allow for open public space by the waterway.

In addition a car park will be included to allow easy access to both the canal and open space that will include landscaping.

Canal & River Trust

The application for planning permission for the new bridge was submitted in July 2024 and prepared on behalf of Canal & River Trust in Wales, working in partnership with Powys County Council to restore the Montgomery Canal after getting funding through the Levelling Up Fund.

It is understood the plans were quickly passed as the bridge was discovered to be 'no longer suitable for modern vehicular traffic'.
