THERE IS to be a new commission this month concerning boat licensing.

With a civil servant leading the various people taking part in the commission, the trust tells that it will thoroughly investigate the present somewhat haphazard method of boat licensing, discovering how it is worked and implemented and see if it needs any changes.

The chairman of the commission will be Andrew Cowan, a former senior partner at Devonshires. Then Penelope Barber, a boating representative on the trust’s council together with  trustee Sir Chris Kelly, a former senior civil servant and former boat owner, make up the three strong commission.

Engage with boaters

The commission, it is told will actively engage with boaters and other stakeholders, ensuring their views are considered.

When completed the commission’s report will be submitted to the Canal & River Trust to be overseen by a constituted boating sub-committee of the board, chaired by David Orr CBE, the trust’s chairman. There will be more details we are promised when the commission has first met.

It is told that this commission will be independent.
