PENALTIES OF UP TO £1,000 are now in force in an attempt to tackle illegal boat moorings on parts of the Thames.

This is after Elmbridge Borough Council won a legal challenge, Janet Friend reports.

Now in force

The council has won a public consultation to go ahead to consider the final details of the new rules, that came into force on Wednesday 19th March.

ThamesBoatMovedMany residents near and around the riverside have complained about unapproved boat moorings as well as the litter and noise they can create.

As only the landowner is able to take legal action against unofficial moorings, Elmbridge Borough Council has often been restricted in what it can do.

Though there were 14 legal challenges to the the council's case, it won them all except one, so the ruling came into force.

Bargees

At an earlier consultation Marcus Trower, who is a liveaboard on the river and a member of the National Bargee Travellers Association, argued the 'draconian proposal will punish people for the simple act of living in their homes'.

However, should these boaters abide by the rules they would have no problem.
