Boaters in Barton Marina woke up to life on the skew and very tight mooring lines, writes Ralph Freeman.

Getting off the boat was no longer trivial as there was a considerable step down to the jetty that was almost awash. I have never seen the water on this pound of the Trent & Mersey Canal so high.

Blocked

One assumes the bywash by the nearby Barton Lock is blocked? In years gone by, a resident in the nearby Wharfe House used to clear the spill twice a day in return for a mooring outside Wharfe House.

Nowadays I have known a CaRT employee have to travel from Stoke-on-Trent to do the same.

You see, CaRT are now too professional to enter into such ad-hoc arrangements, no matter how beneficial!

So the pound floods at the weekends if the spill gets choked. That's progress for you!
