THERE IS A CHANGE from calling it a vehicle strike when a vehicle hits a road barrier.

aubreys liftIt's now a vehicle 'incident' Keith Gudgin reports.

Exactly what it is

Over the years when a vehicle damages a barrier it has been called a vehicle strike—for that is exactly what it is. They costing Canal & River Trust thousands of pounds.

At one time there was a discussion concerning installing cameras on the ones that get the most damage, but nothing came of it.

This time it is the Oxford Canal that is closed at  Aubrey's Lift Bridge 221 with its barriers damaged yesterday, Sunday.

Left with the cost

So providing the vehicle is still roadworthy, as nearly all of them are, it speeds off and the trust is left with the cost.

So a new definition is called for—a vehicle 'incident'.  But it still costs as the vehicle has long gone!
