THERE ARE PLANS to fence off part of the Nene at Thrapston to prevent anti-social behaviour.

But has been criticised by local residents, with it being called 'expensive and ludicrous', Janet Friend reports.

ThrapstonBridgeA 5ft fence

Thrapston Town Council had voted to construct a 5ft fence along the river near the nine arches costing an estimated £5,000. The picture shows the nine arches at Thrapston.

The decision taken after residents raised concerns about disturbances and litter by the side of the river.

But the public backlash over the plans for the fence have caused other options to be discussed by the council next week, after a number of residents living near the river objected.

Resident Rosemary Balcer,  explained:

Heavy handed

"I have never heard of anything so heavy-handed, destructive, expensive and ludicrous for a problem that is seasonal and then mostly at weekends.

"I would like to urge the town council to think creatively, embrace the beautiful surroundings, promote the town, community and riverside, which can be regarded only as an asset, not a problem."

There were others who were concerned about the effect on wildlife and river access for swimmers and boating—it appears it is a mooring site for boaters.
