A 70ft CONVERTED WORK BOAT broke free from its moorings on the Witham Navigation on Sunday.
Drifting downstream until boaters made it safe by tying it up, Janet Friend reports.
There was no crew on board, with it discovered that the owner was in Australia, so obviously not able to rescue it! Though it is understood someone was looking after his boat until he returned.
This person having been contacted and expected to secure the boat.
Travelled four miles
The boat had travelled four miles from its moorings at Langrick on the navigation until it was halted by a number of boaters and their edging it towards the bank where it was tied-up.
Boat owner John Aston, told that stopping such a large and heavy boat was challenging, and it took between eight and 10 people to bring it under control as it was picking up speed near to Boston, and the group also prevented serious damage to a lock by bringing it under control.
It is not known how the boat became released from its moorings. Photograph is by John Aston.
