THE EXCEPTIONAL DRY WEATHER and lack of water in reservoirs is having an effect on navigations.
Erewash Canal
The Erewash Canal is now closed between Fields Lock 66 and Gallows Inn Lock 67, Keith Gudgin reports.
Though being informed the trust is working to restore navigation, but we are told not to attempt to navigate this pound of the canal whilst levels recover.
Huddersfield Narrow
Works taking place at Slaithwaite Reservoir have necessitated a drawdown of reservoir levels that has been ongoing for several months, the trust explains. Image by Canal & River Trust.
With recent warm, dry weather and an increase in boat movements on the canal, there are insufficient water resources to maintain navigation for the long term on the lower section of the canal.
So from Monday 15th June navigation between Lock 1E and Lock 31E will close with these locks being padlocked. There is no intimation when these pounds will reopen for navigation, it depending on rainfall.
Rochdale Canal
We are informed that a navigation closure has been put in place between Lock 20 and Lock 24 due to a boater operational error.
This has caused lack of water in the pounds and there has been little improvement in the levels since this occurred, with navigation still closed.
Huddersfield Narrow Canal again
Another stoppage through lack of water has just been announced on Saturday morning effecting the Huddersfield Narrow Canal.
There is now a closure continuing the earlier closure.
Water levels are too low to travel, between locks 14E and 20E. With the trust telling that boaters must make no attempt to travel in the areas of low water as you may get stuck and require rescuing.
Stort
There are low water levels between locks 14 and 15 of the navigation. As a result this pound has been closed to navigation.
The trust tells its team is working towards resolving this.
