A DEVICE that removes litter and particularly microplastic particles from water has been tested in the Nene.

The Seabin was floated in the river in Peterborough and found successful, Janet Friend remarks.

SeabinIt works very similar to the way fish tank filtration works, the Seabin contains a pump and traps anything floating in the water in a mesh bag, which can then be emptied and analysed for pollutants.

A wider project

This is the part of a wider project by Recoup to handle such over a wider area in the Nene and surrounding waterways.

Late last year it had recovered a Walkers crisp packet from 1997 that was perfectly preserved and a plastic drink bottle over 20 years old.

It was research from the University of Manchester in 2021 that found untreated wastewater was creating microplastic hot-spots on riverbeds.

It was discovered last year by studies at universities in the USA that bottled water could contain up to 100 times more tiny pieces of plastic than was previously believed.
