IT IS AN INACCESSIBLE canal towpath that a local council is to resurface owing to its poor condition.
It's overgrowth causes problems to older users with any infirmity, Janet Friend reports.
Council to pay
So Wychavon District Council is to pay, via the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, to resurface the towpath of Droitwich Junction Canal between Droitwich and Salwarpe, that was reopened when the waterway was joined with the Barge Canal to reconnect the Worcester & Birmingham Canal to the Severn.
The broad lock Barge Canal was reopened in 2010 followed by the narrow lock Junction Canal in 2011 as part of the then British Waterways restoration scheme.
Our photographs show the weeds on the canal, and the one below, Vines Park.
The towpath from Vines Lane in Droitwich to Ladywood Lock in Salwarpe is to be resurfaced after Wychavon District Council wanted to make the area more inviting.
A spokesperson for Wychavon District Council explained:
"We're improving footpaths with materials from a pond, allowing visitors to enjoy the meadow while protecting local fauna. This has been possible thanks to funding from Wychavon via the UK Shared Prosperity Fund."
Wildlife area
The overall project is expected to take five weeks and will include making Coney Meadow into a wildlife area that lies next to the waterway.
The project will include moorings. solar lighting and benches, together with a kayak launch and an e-bike hire scheme.
