A MASSIVE SINK HOLE has appeared overnight on the Llangollen Canal.

Llangollen SinkholeIt completely closing the waterway as Alfred Overton's appreciated photograph taken this morning, clearly shows.

There is a massive gaping hole with even part of a narrowboat just showing poking out.

Huge pound

The sinkhole has drained the huge pound of the waterway with many boats now stranded on the bottom, and as can been seen from the photograph many in precarious positions around the actual hole itself.

The sink hole is at Chemistry with the pound stretching to New Marton Lock, some 14 miles.  This includes the connection with the Montgomery Canal that joins the Llangollen at Lower Frankton.

The draining of the canal has of course cut off the important supply to Hurleston Reservoir, that will mean Canal & River Trust taking action to supply the reservoir.

A major incident was declared when Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service responded to a landslip and confirmed a canal was affected, with crews called at 4.22am this morning.
