A COMPLETE STOPPAGE will be in place during March and April to repair lock gates.
These repairs are on Swineford Lock 3 (pictures) and Kelston Lock 5, Keith Gudgin reports.
Both Kennet & Avon locks have sustained significant damage with Lock 5 also having fire damage at the end of 2025, with Canal & River Trust stating this leaving no viable repair options but complete gates.
The gates have deteriorated beyond repair and must be replaced promptly to ensure safe and reliable navigation. But due to the length they take to manufacture the earliest date for the new gates is mid-March.
Canal & River Trust state that currently require assistance to operate.
The work will start on Tuesday 17th March and be completed by Thursday 30th April, which means a stoppage will be in force during this period.
There will be a restriction whilst the site is set up and a further restriction during site demolition. The work will of course depend on river flow levels.
