THE SUTTON WEAVER SWING BRIDGE is to close to traffic for essential repairs.

SuttonSwingIt starting at noon on Sunday 15th February Janet Friend reports.

Closed 24 hours a day

It will remain closed 24 hours a day until it reopens at noon Sunday 22nd February.

The swing bridge, which is now 100 years old, is undergoing essential maintenance with the stoppage scheduled to coincide with the schools’ half-term holidays that will minimise disruption.

Specialist engineers have installed a new control panel, road barriers, signalling and navigation lights, and are now in the process of rewiring, installing new drive motors, and reinstating the refurbished major mechanical components.

Vital maintenance

A spokesperson for Canal & River Trust told:

“These vital maintenance and repair works, which are a priority to protect the long-term operation of the bridge, are on schedule to be completed in March.

“We have worked closely with the council, local partners, and our contractors and have made every effort to keep any disruption to a minimum.

“As these commissioning works require a full road closure for all road users, including pedestrians and cyclists, they have been carefully planned and arranged during the February school half-term to help reduce their impact.

The road over the bridge is the A56 and is close to the junction with the M56.
