IT WAS WAY BACK in October of last year that a diesel spill closed the Chesterfield Canal.

But at last it has reopened, Keith Gudgin reports.

Seven months later the pounds between Kiveton Dog Kennel Bridge 31 and Thorpe Pudding Dyke Bridge 34 can be navigated.

Not a great deal of information

There has not been a great deal of information concerning this spill and why it took so long to clear, and all we are now told is — Contractors have visited the site and removed all of the containment methods, the navigation is now open for use as normal.

In the past we were informed that it was a diesel spillage and the trust was working with the Environment Agency to locate the source of the diesel, and that booms and absorption pads were around the diesel to prevent its spread.
