THE two year project to install barriers on the Avon weirs is nearing completion, with the fifth barrier.

This is part of the health and safety scheme to make the river safer for users, and prevent boats being swept over the weirs, is case of either loss of power or when the river is in flood, Alan Tilbury tells us.

Dangerous

It was thought the weirs were dangerous, particularly to inexperienced boaters. Signs have of course also been installed warning of the weirs.

The project was a partnership between the Environment Agency and the Avon Navigation Trust, with members of the trust carrying out much of the work.
