THERE HAS been one thing about the many failing swing bridges on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal.
They are usually quickly repaired, reports Keith Gudgin.
Broken barrier
But now, New Lane Swing Bridge 31 was closed on the 24th of January caused by a broken barrier—three weeks ago, yet is still not repaired.
Canal & River Trust stating that 'our contractors have been instructed to investigate and repair'.
Broken barriers are a regular occurrence on mechanised swing bridges, and are usually quickly repaired, but often by a 'local team'.
This time we had the message that contractors had attended the site and have confirmed a new barrier is required. Then came a further message that the contractors were collecting the barrier from the manufacturers. Then the message that it had been delayed. Then a message that it had been further delayed.
'Our teams'
After which it was 'our teams' that are investigating all options to make repairs as soon as possible.
Meanwhile the boaters wait, but if the trust's team is involved something might be quickly done.
