DUCKWEED TOOK OVER the canal basin in Stourport this week.

With dogs believing it is grass and at least one drowning, Janet Friend reports.

StourportGreen2Paul Jefferys, owner of Oliver's Coffee Bar, telling his neighbour's dog perished in the basin during the week.

Changed colour in the hot sun

The basin changed colour as duckweed flourished in the hot sun, with Canal & River Trust installing notices for people to keep away from its edge and keep dogs under control.

The problem with dogs is they recognise the duckweed as grass—and onto it they go, then sink in the water.

The trust have had volunteers to scoop up the duckweed, particularly around its edges where animals can mistake it for grass.
