THE LONGFORD ENGINE by the side of the Coventry Canal has closed.

A pub that has ben open since the 1700's, Roger Fox reports.

Not yet acheived

Though the owners are trying to find new landlords as yet this has not been acheived, with a sign on the pub advertising the lease.

LongfordEngineIt is well known by boaters and particularly with matchday drinkers, usually welcoming away fans when Coventry City play at home, it being close to the football ground.

The management issued a statement stating: 'Sad news but we are now closed until further notice'.

The pub was last on the market two years ago, and at that time was described as a 'brilliant community pub uniquely located on the canal side in Longford'.

The history

The history of the pub shows it as dating back to at least 1772. It was initially known as the Fire Engine, which changed to Engine Inn, then Old Engine Inn.

It even became the Canal Boat for a few years, but it had been known locally as the Engine for so long many ignored the new name.
