THE STOPPAGE ON HEARTBREAK HILL on the Trent & Mersey Canal has been extended.

These locks from 41 to 71 were closed to navigation on the 25th July, Keith Gudgin reports.

But the stoppage has now been extended from Lock 41 to Lock 75 to include Middlewich, again through lack of water.

Closed from Harecastle

This means the canal is closed from Harecastle Tunnel to Middlewich.

This comes into force on Thursday 28th August, giving a week to allow boaters to adjust their plans.

The Canal & River Trust tell that it is unable to provide water to the dry pounds, and so it needs to close off the remaining Middlewich locks due to reduced inflows.
