TOLD AS BEING one of only two horse-drawn boats in the country, is for sale.
It being operated by Phillip Brand for around 40 years, Janet Friend reports.
Considering retirement
As owner of Tiverton Canal Company, he tells that after all that time he and his wife were now considering retirement, and was hoping for a potential purchaser with a love for horses and boats.
But should a a buyer not be found to operate the business on the Grand Western Canal he could be forced to liquidate the business, leaving the waterway without such an attraction for the first time in years, Phillip Brand telling:
"I think if you've got the love for both, it doesn't matter if you've worked for horse drawn barge or not, the two go together very seamlessly actually.
"If nobody decides to buy it, then we will carry on for a certain amount of time. At the end of the day if it doesn't sell then it would be a very sad situation of us liquidating the business."
A real loss
A councillor told it would be a real loss to the town if the business couldn't continue. Everyone knows Tiverton and the Grand Western Canal for the barges.
It is not known if the owner would sell the horse separately, so that it could perhaps work another canal.
