ALTHOUGH IT WAS STATED that lack of water closed the Aylesbury Arm to boating, it seems otherwise.
For up to date over 150 tonnes of weed has been removed from the waterway that has prevented navigation, Janet Friend reports.
A specialist weed boat has been working steadily along the waterway, tackling dense growth that has made navigation almost impossible for passing boats.
Dale Canfield, Area Operations Manager for the Canal & River Trust (Grand Union South), explained:
“Boats that attempted the Arm earlier this year reported it was virtually impassable. To support local businesses, we’ve been allowing pre-booked passages on Thursdays for Bates Boatyard and the Aylesbury Canal Society.
"This arrangement is strictly for business purposes, not leisure travel.
”So far, more than 150 tonnes of weed have been removed, with the clearance now over halfway complete.
“I will not be allowing any boats to pass through other than for business purposes until the weed work is complete.
Dale expects the work to take around another two weeks before the Arm can reopen fully.
