IT WAS ON THE 31ST OCTOBER that pollution occurred on the Chesterfield Canal with a diesel spillage.

It closing the navigation, Keith Gudgin reports.

Open later this month

But it must have been a bad spillage as it happened on the 31st of October and will take until later this month before the navigation is reopened, with the Canal & River Trust working with the Environment Agency to clear it up.

The pollution was from diesel and spanned the canal from Pudding Dyke Bridge to Dog Kennel Bridge.

It took time to locate the source of the spillage that was diesel.

Both booms and absorption pads were placed around the diesel to prevent its spread, it then of course closing the navigation.

Further Pollution

The Chesterfield Canal had a further pollution spillage on the 6th August last year.

That time it was on the summit pound, with the pound closed to prevent it spreading down though the locks.
