THE CHESTERFIELD CANAL TRUST is looking for volunteers to be part of its Derbyshire Maintenance Team.

GirlsInBoatIt was awarded a grant from the National Lottery Community Fund, to help recruit people to look after the restored sections of the canal.

Two years project

This is a two years project to develop teams of volunteers, with the aim of maintaining and developing their local green spaces, both on the water and the surrounding environment.

There will be a variety of roles, some hands on maintenance, some monitoring the environment’ some conducting surveys and some keeping an eye out for areas that need attention. There will be something for all abilities. Don’t worry about knowledge or skills—you will be trained.

The money from the lottery arrived before Christmas and the trust is already booking and starting training, purchasing equipment and putting together a recruitment campaign for new local volunteers. It expects to be holding taster sessions and open days this month, with the work programme starting in May.

Move on to new section

Initially the focus will be the already completed areas around Staveley. In the summer, when the restoration work is finished, it will move on to the new section. If you are interested or want to know more, please email:
