THE narrowboat that sank in Weston Lock on the Trent & Mersey Canal was caught on the cill.

A member of the rescue team told narrowboatworld that 'whoever was working the paddles obviously did not realise what was happening or they would have closed them immediately'.

Bow sank

Our correspondent T Lang, taking the photograph, explained:

"It was obvious what occurred, with water being released from the lock whilst the boat was right back over the cill, and its bow simply sank as the paddles were left open.  I have been in the same situation myself, but realised what was happening when the stern wasn't doing down, so blew the horn like mad and yelled for my wife to drop the paddles!"

The narrowboat was River Dancer.
