THE INLAND WATERWAY ASSOCIATION announced a rally would be held on the Bridgewater Canal to support the restoration of its breach.

BridgewaterBreach2This was to take place on the August Bank Holiday but it has been cancelled, Janet Friend reports.

Ongoing closures

This has now been postponed due to ongoing closures, stoppages and unpredictable water levels across the network, making it 'challenging for boat movements', the association tells.

The rally was designed to bring together boaters, communities and stakeholders in support of restoring the breach that will be months before work starts on its repair.

The Bridgewater Canal breached on this year's New Year’s Day after torrential rain, but it will not be until the end of next year when it will be repaired.

Canals closed

But with the Leeds & Liverpool Canal flights closed, together with the Ashton Canal closed and the Rochdale impassible there can be no access for northern boaters.

And with so many closures on other waterways, the Inland Waterways Association has realised there can be few boats that would have access to the Bridgewater Canal, so it is cancelled.

But we are told it could be held when conditions improve.
