A LOCK ON THE ROCHDALE CANAL is being ashed to save water.

This is a method used in the old days, Keith Gudgin reports.

It is a method were ashes are spread against a leaking lock, they being thrown into the water near the lock with the force of the leaking water then drawing them into the space and sealing it.

This has been done on Brearley Lock 6 on the waterway to obviously strop water leaking from the lock.

Sinkhole

Examining the next Lock 5 it was discovered by the team that a sink hole had opened up that means this lock is also closed to navigation.

This will be closely be monitored after it was realised this will have to be repaired before this lock too can be reopened.
