THE Canal & River Trust told us yesterday that despite a big push by the contractors on site, deteriorating weather and equipment breakdowns has slowed progress on the work on the breach of the Macclesfield Canal.

There is still a huge amount of silt to be removed from the damaged area, which is hampered by the limited access to the site, Keith Gudgin tells us.

Slowing down progress

The access gives only one restricted way onto the site and of course limits the size of equipment that can safely be used, all slowing down progress.

However, should things now go well today (Thursday) all the work will be completed allowing the pound to be filled and the canal re-opened by Saturday morning.
