As a regular user of the Avon at Bath, like others I have spoken to, I am worried about the every increasing amount of railings that are being erected along the river, writes Graham DeVine.

It is making it extremely difficult to moor, not the actual tying up, as in a way the railings are handy, but having to climb over them, that I am finding more and more difficult as both of the crew are getting older and arthritis is taking its toll.

Stop drunks

As I believe we all know the railings are to stop drunks falling in the river as they stagger along the towpath, which I understand means that gates cannot be included, as the stupid people will most likely open them and still fall in the river.

As can be gathered, I don't have much sympathy, as people should be able to look after themselves and not need railings to keep them safe.  Before long 'they' will start on the canals with railings, as they have done to stop the drunks in Manchester from falling in the canal or missing it and hitting the towpath.  Where will it end?
