IT'S BANK Holiday Monday and this morning two CaRT workers came along and fitted a sign onto the gate here at Fradley, writes Keith Gudgin.

Not that it appears to have much to say and as it's next to the moorings above Shadehouse Lock it's not on a visitor entry route either.

No sign for boaters

Another sign, an expensive metal one, that has been fitted there appears to be somewhat lacking in that, given the fact it is fitted right next to a major mooring, there is no information on the sign for boaters.

It does not show the mooring points, water points rubbish bins or Elsan point.

Erect a seat

In the afternoon of the Bank Holiday Monday two CaRT vans turn up with three men in and they proceed to dig holes to erect a seat.

What is so important about it that it has to be done on a Bank Holiday Monday?

The seat may be a commemoration but how do CaRT justify paying three men premium wages for two hours to erect a seat on a bank holiday.

If they have spare capacity of workforce why do they not get the lock paddle at Woodend Lock fixed, it is after all only about half a mile further up the canal? It would also have eased the passage for all the boats that have passed through here over the week-end.

Wasted resources

All prime examples of wasted resources again from CaRT. Expensive signs that have no real meaning in the place they are fitted and unnecessary work being done at a premium cost.

No wonder CaRT can't afford to do all the repairs needed.
