STUDENTS from Cambridge University caused chaos on the Cam on Sunday celebrating the end of their exams.
Many of the undergraduates, drinking beer, wine and spirits were drunk on the river causing chaos leaving hirers and visiting boaters shocked by their display as many were stripping down to their underwear, Alan Tilbury tells us.
Suicide Sunday
This was part of their 'Suicide Sunday' when the undergraduates celebrate the end of their exams by taking to the river, not only in normal craft, but home-made boats, that quickly sink.
As the drink took hold, the students crashed into each other and any other craft that came in their sights, with families attempting to enjoy an afternoon on the river unable to evade the chaos.
Visitors were shocked, and those on the river were intimidated by the wanton behaviour of the students as they crashed into each over, leapt from punt to punt and splashed about in the water.
Frightening
The visitors and residents too found it impossible to get past the affray being caused by the students, finding it quite frightening, especially those with children on board, with one visitor telling Mail Online:
"We had hired a punt to go along the Backs with our children, but it was quite frightening as the students were really intimidating. They were being very rowdy and kept dive bombing into the water, so we struggled to punt past them.
"Lots of them were drinking and only dressed in their underwear, so we tried to get away as quickly as we could as we had our young kids with us and we didn't want them witnessing that sort of behaviour."
The students were dunking each other in the water as visitors struggled to punt past, with one student rolling a keg of beer through the river and into a punt so they could continue drinking. Then 10 teams took part in a very messy boat race, crashing into each other causing punts to sink.
